How to Apply : Ph.D. in Communication Sciences and Disorders

The deadline for submission of application materials for the Ph.D. program is December 1st.

Students holding a Maters Degree must apply directly to the University of South Florida Graduate School Admissions Office using the FACTS Online Graduate Application.

In addition to the online application, the applicant must submit:

  1. Official transcripts for all coursework completed to date.
  2. Official GRE scores from Educational Testing Service (Institution code: 5828, Department Code: 0602).
  3. A letter of intent. (view details)
  4. Three letters of recommendation (view details)
  5. A resume that summarizes your academic and work history (optional).

Admission criteria

  • Master's degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders, Speech and Hearing Sciences, or a related field (e.g. Linguistics, Psychology, Education).
    • If you come from a non-CSD background, you may be required to take pre-requisite coursework in the basic speech, language, and hearing sciences depending on your career plans and desired area of focus.

  • GPA of 3.0 or above from previous graduate study.

  • GRE scores at the 33rd percentile for Verbal, Quantitative and Writing subtests, taken within 5 years preceding the application.
    • Students with lower scores may be offered admission on a conditional basis if the letter of intent and letters of recommendation are particularly strong.
    • The GRE requirement may be waived for students with demonstrated research experience (e.g. previous publications).

Transferring from Another Program

Students seeking to change their graduate program must reapply for admission to another program within the Department or University. Students may not transfer from one program to another without the completion of internal program transfer forms and approval by appropriate admissions committees.

      These positions cover most of a student’s tuition, and include a stipend of $10 per hour.
      • Graduate assistants usually work for 10 hours per week.
      • Students may be assigned to a faculty member and assist that faculty member with classes/research.
      • Graduate assistants may also be assigned to newborn hearing screening positions. These students screen the hearing of newborns at local hospitals.
      • Assistantships are typically given to students with strong files.
      • Obtain application from the academic/departmental secretary once you’ve been admitted.
