Graduate Certificates

Hearing Specialist: Early Intervention

The Graduate Certificate Program in Hearing Specialist: Early Intervention is designed to prepare specialists from various backgrounds to work with families with infants/toddlers diagnosed with hearing loss (i.e. deaf or hard of hearing). The focus of the Certificate courses is on early identification and amplification or cochlear implantation for spoken, cued, and/or signed language development. Course content will cover the range of communication, language, and academic program options available to parents in the State of Florida.  Those completing the Certificate Program will be eligible for certification through the State of Florida Children’s Medical Services SHINE (Serving Hearing Impaired Newborns Effectively) Program, and will be prepared to work in public or private school or clinic settings providing home-based and/or site-based educational and support services.  The Certificate program consists of 4 online courses, offered for graduate-level credit.  All courses are also transferable and can be applied toward the M.S. in Aural Habilitation: Deaf Education.

Courses:

EDG 5752:  Working with Families: A pluralistic perspective (3)
The course addresses the impact of the socio/cultural environment on the education of at-risk children and children with disabilities; family systems theory, principles of multi-cultural education, strategies for working effectively with families of school-age children, diverse cultures and family structures represented in school populations today.

SPA 6322: Aural Rehabilitation: Children (3)
This course provides information and strategies for aural habilitation intervention techniques used with children who are deaf or hard of hearing.  Includes techniques of speechreading, auditory training, and spoken language for the deaf and hard of hearing.

SPA 6421: Language for the Hearing Impaired (3)
This course presents techniques and materials for facilitating spoken language development for deaf and hard of hearing children, and children with auditory disorders, as well as evaluation and analysis of contemporary methods.

SPA 6930:  Family Centered Deaf Education (3)
This course focuses on the special needs of deaf and hard of hearing children and their families.  Topics of study include: initial considerations, family support, professional teaming, prenatal and postnatal development, assessment, and planning.  Hearing assistive technologies, aural habilitation, use of sign communication, and use of Cued Speech will be discussed.

Coursework can be completed in as few as 2 semesters, but must be completed within 3 years of application to the USF Office of Graduate Certificates.
